Energy Saving for All 2019 Campaign was launched on the 5thof July by Secretary for the Environment KS Wong, to encourage the public to save energy and do more to mitigate climate change.
The Energy Saving for All 2019 Campaign is organised jointly by the Environment Bureau and the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department, while the campaign comprises the 3 components: Energy Saving Charter 2019, the 4T Charter and the Energy Saving Championship Scheme 2019.
About 3,800 organisations have signed up for the Energy Saving Charter this year, pledging to maintain temperatures at their premises between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius from June to September. These organisations also vowed to switch off appliances when not in use and procure energy-efficient devices.
More than 1,500 premises have joined the 4T Charter with the goal of setting an action timeline target and reporting energy saving results.
As part of the campaign, the Energy Championship Scheme encourages the planning and adoption of Innovation and Technology (I&T) on energy efficiency and conservation and / or renewable energy technology by internal teams of various industry organisations or through collaboration with I&T partners, so as to promote concerted efforts among the industries in low-carbon transformation.
The scheme encourages more organisations from different sectors to take the lead to plan for and adopt the application of I&T on EE&C and/or RE technology, offer premises to facilitate field test and share their experience.
The HKSAR Government, itself, has pledged a new target of reducing 5% electricity consumption in government buildings over the years from 2015-2020, using 2013-14 as the base year. Major new government buildings and public housing are targeted to achieve a higher green building standard.
Noting the Government is championing the low-carbon transition of Hong Kong, Mr Wong said the Council for Sustainable Development has been invited to engage the public on a long-term decarbonisation strategy.
“I encourage members of the public to actively provide their views on issues such as energy saving and carbon emission reduction, with a view of supporting Hong Kong to deepen decarbonisation and combat climate change.”
Climate Change is a cross-sector, cross-domain subject with far reaching socio-economic and cultural impacts across the globe. As a part of the global village, there is a necessity for Hong Kong to respond positively to this issue and make greater efforts to combat climate change.
